Vorkuta is a historically significant mining city located deep within the Russian Arctic in the Komi Republic. Situated approximately 160 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, the city was officially established in 1936 following the discovery of extensive coal deposits in the Pechora basin. During the Soviet era, Vorkuta gained notoriety as the administrative headquarters of Vorkutlag, one of the largest and most brutal labor camps in the Gulag system, where tens of thousands of prisoners endured extreme conditions. After World War II, the settlement evolved into a vital industrial hub, supplying high-grade coking coal to the Soviet steel industry. Since the collapse of the USSR in 1991, however, Vorkuta has suffered from a drastic population decline as many mines became economically unviable and were shuttered. The local climate is characterized by exceptionally long, snowy winters, with temperatures frequently plunging below minus 40 degrees Celsius. Despite its economic hardships, Vorkuta stands as a stark testament to the challenges of maintaining human infrastructure in the planet's most extreme environments.
