Vitim Plateau (Russia)

Weather…

The Vitim Plateau is an extensive upland region located in eastern Buryatia and the Transbaikal Territory of Russia. It is characterized by a rolling landscape with average elevations between 1,200 and 1,600 meters, uniquely shaped by Cenozoic volcanic activity. The plateau features numerous extinct volcanic cones and vast basalt fields that testify to its active geological past. Continuous permafrost underlies much of the area, impeding water drainage and resulting in a high density of marshes and shallow lakes in its depressions. The dominant vegetation is larch-dominated taiga, which is well-suited to the region's extreme temperature fluctuations and poor soil quality. The Vitim River, a major tributary of the Lena, originates near the plateau and has carved deep, scenic valleys along its periphery. Due to its remoteness and harsh subarctic climate, the Vitim Plateau remains sparsely populated, preserving a pristine environment for Siberian wildlife such as moose, brown bears, and lynx.
