Vasyugan Swamp (Russia)

Weather…

The massive Vasyugan Swamp, sprawling extensively across the notoriously flat Western Siberian Plain, constitutes one of the largest single continuous swamp systems on the entire planet. This seemingly endless, bewildering labyrinth of peat bogs, shallow lakes, and dense forest patches holds incalculable global value for climate regulation; it acts as a gigantic natural carbon sink, permanently trapping enormous quantities of greenhouse gases within its thick peat layers. Simultaneously, the area serves as the primary freshwater reservoir for the entire region, giving rise to countless rivers and streams that eventually flow into the Ob River. The untouched, highly inaccessible marshland provides a deeply secure habitat for a wide range of rare wildlife, including majestic golden eagles, moose, and wild reindeer. Although climate change is naturally encouraging the swamp's expansion, the delicate ecosystem remains highly vulnerable to disruptions caused by nearby oil and natural gas extraction operations.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time is summer from June to August when bird life is most active and migratory birds stop over. Spring brings floods, autumn is shorter. In winter the swamp freezes and is hard to access.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon are when birds are most active. Midday is often quiet. Morning hours also provide the best visibility as fog lifts.
📜
Etiquette
Avoid disturbing bird colonies; stay on boat or boardwalk paths. No noise to avoid endangering breeding. Waste must be taken away as the swamp is very fragile.
🎒
What to bring
Waterproof boots or rubber boots are essential as the ground is wet. Binoculars for birdwatching and insect repellent against mosquitoes are a must. A waterproof bag for gear.
🧭
Getting there
The swamp is extremely remote, reachable only by boat or helicopter. Guided tours from nearby settlements are necessary. The best base is the city of Tomsk, from where tours depart.
🦌
What to expect
Birdwatching requires a lot of patience; often birds are far away or hidden. Bring a field guide and sit in a quiet spot. A longer observation period is worthwhile.
