Tobolsk is one of Siberia's most historically significant cities, situated at the confluence of the Tobol and Irtysh rivers in the Tyumen Oblast. Founded in 1587, it served for centuries as the administrative, cultural, and spiritual capital of the vast Siberian territory. Its most prominent landmark is the Tobolsk Kremlin, the only stone kremlin in all of Siberia, which stands majestically on a hill overlooking the lower town. The city is deeply intertwined with Russian scientific and artistic history, being the birthplace of Dmitri Mendeleev, the creator of the periodic table, and the composer Alexander Alyabyev. In the 20th century, Tobolsk became notable as the site of exile for the last Russian Tsar, Nicholas II, and his family, who were held here after the February Revolution of 1917. Today, Tobolsk has transformed into a major hub for the petrochemical industry while meticulously preserving its 18th and 19th-century architectural heritage. Visitors are drawn to its numerous cathedrals, monasteries, and historical museums that chronicle the long and complex saga of Siberia's development.
