Tobolsk Kremlin (Russia)

Weather…

The Tobolsk Kremlin in Western Siberia is a unique architectural monument and the only stone fortress located beyond the Ural Mountains. Picturesquely built on Trident Hill (Troitsky Mys), the fortress towers high above the Irtysh River, serving as a testament to Tobolsk's historical importance as the former administrative and religious capital of Siberia. Construction of the stone complex began in the late 17th century after previous wooden structures had been repeatedly destroyed by fires. The centerpiece of the kremlin is the majestic St. Sophia-Assumption Cathedral, complete with its characteristic onion domes, marking it as the oldest stone building in Siberia. In addition to religious buildings, the complex encompasses historic administrative halls, a guest house, an imposing bell tower, and thick defensive walls. Often referred to as the 'Pearl of Siberia', the kremlin is today the region's most significant tourist destination and a living witness to the history of the exploration of Asia.
