Teriberka

Teriberka is the only place in Russia reachable by road directly on the Arctic Ocean. The village gained fame through the film 'Leviathan', which captured its raw beauty and melancholic atmosphere. Visitors come here to feel the edge of the world, where the endless tundra meets the gray waters of the Barents Sea. The famous ship graveyard at the entrance to the village is an impressive testament to the past. Natural wonders include the 'Dragon Egg Beach' with its perfectly rounded stones and the Teriberka waterfall, which plunges directly into the sea. In winter, Teriberka is one of the best places worldwide to observe the Northern Lights without light pollution. In recent years, the place has developed into a center for whale watching, where humpback whales and orcas can often be seen directly from small boats. Access is by car or bus from Murmansk via an often adventurous road. The best time to travel is summer (June to August) for whales and hiking or from September to March for the Northern Lights. Travelers should be prepared for extreme weather and limited but authentic tourist infrastructure. A must is trying fresh scallops and sea urchins, which come here straight from the icy sea.
