Sakhalin-2 LNG Plant (Russia)

Weather…

The Sakhalin-2 LNG Plant in the south of Sakhalin Island (Prigorodnoye) is a pioneering project in the Russian energy industry and the first of its kind in the country. Following years of development and massive foreign direct investment, the facility began exporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) in 2009. Its geographical proximity to Asia provides the project with an invaluable strategic advantage, as the rapidly growing energy markets in Japan, South Korea, and China can be supplied via a direct, short maritime route. The state-of-the-art infrastructure includes not only the liquefaction plant itself but also a massive network of onshore and offshore pipelines, drilling rigs off the harsh Pacific coast, and a specialized deep-water port designed for gigantic LNG carriers. Sakhalin-2 catapulted Russia's role from a traditional pipeline gas supplier to a flexible global player in the rapidly expanding LNG market and is essential for the economic development of the Russian Far East.
