Pechora-Ilych Nature Reserve (Russia)

Weather…

The Pechora-Ilych Nature Reserve, situated at the western foothills of the Northern Ural Mountains in the Komi Republic, is a realm full of incredible natural wonders. Founded in 1930, it combines with the neighboring Yugyd Va National Park to form the UNESCO World Heritage site known as the 'Virgin Komi Forests', which constitutes the largest continuous expanse of completely untouched old-growth forest in all of Europe. A truly unique and fascinating feature of this reserve is the world's very first experimental moose farm, which has been continually conducting domestication and physiological research on these massive herbivores since the 1940s. The dense boreal forests harbor thriving populations of brown bears, wolves, sables, and wild reindeer. However, the reserve's most spectacular geological draw is the remote Manpupuner Plateau. Here, seven gigantic stone pillars, towering up to 42 meters high, rise abruptly from the flat tundra. These wind-weathered monoliths, revered as petrified giants in local Mansi mythology, are officially recognized as one of the 'Seven Wonders of Russia'.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Summer (June-August) is best for seeing moose at the farm when calves are born. Autumn (September-October) has not only moose rut but also colorful forests and clear views of the Manpupuner rock formations.
🌅
Best time of day
Moose are most active early morning and late evening when feeding and going to water. For the Manpupuner rocks, early morning or late afternoon light is most photogenic.
📜
Etiquette
At the moose farm keep distance from animals and follow staff instructions. Feeding moose is not allowed, and loud noises should be avoided to avoid stressing them.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy footwear is essential for hiking to the Manpupuner rocks, as is insect repellent in summer. Binoculars help observe moose from a safe distance.
🧭
Getting there
The reserve is in the northern Urals, about 600 km northeast of Perm. The nearest city is Syktyvkar; from there gravel roads lead to the reserve, but many areas require a 4x4 vehicle.
🦌
What to expect
Moose on the farm are relatively tame, but in the wild they are shy - be quiet and move slowly. The Manpupuner rocks are a long hike away; plan a full day for the visit.
