Iturup is the largest and arguably most spectacular island of the Kuril chain. It impresses with its dramatic volcanic landscape and unique geological formations. The famous 'White Cliffs', a kilometers-long formation of light pumice stone on the Okhotsk Sea coast, offer an unforgettable sight. Adventurers and nature lovers come here to experience the untouched wilderness, marked by steaming fumaroles, rushing waterfalls, and deep blue crater lakes. An absolute highlight is the Baransky Volcano, on whose slopes hot streams and natural thermal pools invite bathing. These springs are not only relaxing but also known for their healing properties. The island's capital, Kurilsk, has insight into life at the edge of Russia and is the handy starting point for guided expeditions. The wildlife is equally fascinating; with a little luck, you can spot brown bears in their natural habitat or sea lions on the coasts. Culinary experience on Iturup is defined by high-quality caviar and fresh salmon caught directly off the coast. Access is either by plane from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk or by ship, which is an adventurous journey in itself. The best time to visit is from late July to mid-September, when temperatures are most pleasant and fog less frequently obscures the view of the majestic volcanoes.
