Kronotsky Volcano (Russia)

Weather…

Kronotsky Volcano on the remote Kamchatka Peninsula is universally regarded by volcanologists and nature photographers as one of the most aesthetically great stratovolcanoes on Earth. With its flawlessly symmetrical, snow-capped cone, it bears a striking resemblance to Japan's Mount Fuji, rising as a dramatic landmark directly from the shores of the icy blue Lake Kronotsky. The mountain's steep flanks are heavily grooved by deep, radial erosion gullies, known as barrancos, that emanate from the crater, giving the volcano a highly distinctive texture. It is tucked away within the strictly protected Kronotsky Biosphere Reserve, one of Russia's most pristine and untamed wilderness areas, which also encompasses the famous Valley of Geysers. Although currently dormant and exhibiting only weak fumarolic activity, it remains a monumental symbol of the immense tectonic forces shaping the Pacific Ring of Fire.
