The Black Lands (Chyornye Zemli) Nature Reserve, located in the Republic of Kalmykia, protects the only true desert and semi-desert landscape in Europe. The name 'Black Lands' does not refer to the color of the soil, but rather to the geographical phenomenon that the region remains dark and snow-free throughout the winter. The reserve was established in 1990 with the absolute highest priority of saving the Eurasian saiga antelope from impending extinction. This bizarre-looking antelope, instantly recognizable by its oversized, trunk-like nose used to filter dust and warm freezing winter air, had been decimated by relentless poaching. The vast, entirely flat steppes provide the necessary, unobstructed space for the herds' extensive seasonal migrations. In addition to protecting the saiga, the reserve also encompasses a critical section of Lake Manych-Gudilo, a massive saline lake that acts as a vital stopover for flamingos, pelicans, and thousands of other migratory birds. The extreme temperatures have fostered highly specialized, salt-tolerant flora.

Best season

The best time to observe saiga antelopes is late spring (May-June) during calving season and early autumn (September-October) during the rut. During these months, the animals are highly active and gather in larger herds.

Early morning hours and dusk are well-suited as saigas graze on open plains during those times. During the midday heat, the animals typically rest in the shade or in depressions.

Etiquette

Maintain a minimum distance of 100 meters from the animals and stay on designated paths. Feeding or disturbing wildlife is strictly prohibited, as is driving vehicles across the steppe.

What to bring

A good pair of binoculars (10×42 or stronger) is essential for observing saigas from a safe distance. Sturdy, closed hiking boots and plenty of water (at least 2 liters) are mandatory in the dry, hot steppe.

Getting there

The reserve lies in the remote steppe of Kalmykia and is best reached with a 4x4 vehicle or as part of a guided tour. The nearest major city is Elista, from which dirt tracks lead into the protected area.

What to expect

Saigas are shy animals that avoid humans; you often need to wait patiently for several hours at a viewpoint. Plan at least two full days to significantly increase your chances of a sighting.
