The Ras Abrouq rock formations, located on the Zekreet Peninsula in western Qatar, present a surreal, moon-like landscape. Over millennia, wind and water have eroded softer sedimentary rocks, leaving behind mushroom-shaped limestone structures and striking cliffs. The area is often referred to as the 'mushroom desert' due to the appearance of many formations, which resemble a narrow stem with a wide cap. These geological wonders are a testament to the power of natural erosion in an arid environment. The landscape also hosts an installation by artist Richard Serra, titled 'East-West/West-East,' consisting of four massive steel plates placed in the desert, creating a stark contrast with the natural surroundings. The area is also an important wildlife habitat, including a population of reintroduced ostriches.

Getting there
The dramatic rock formations on the Zekreet peninsula are best accessed with a four-wheel-drive vehicle via bumpy dirt tracks after turning off the main highway driving west from the capital, Doha.
Best season
The cooler months between November and March are best suited for extended walks among the bizarre stone pillars, as natural shade is extremely sparse across this vast and desolate open landscape.
Terrain & paths
The ground is often stony, calcareous, and dusty, while the massive mushroom-shaped rocks are scattered across an expansive, slightly hilly area that is very easy and rewarding to explore on foot.
What to bring
Closed-toe shoes to protect against sharp stones, a wide-brimmed sun hat, sunglasses, and plenty of drinking water and snacks are crucial, as there are practically no catering options anywhere nearby.
Parking
Visitors can generally park their vehicles informally quite close to the rock formations. It is strongly advised to stick to compacted vehicle tracks to avoid getting stuck in deep sand or soft dust.
Safety
Do not attempt to climb the fragile limestone structures, as they can break easily under weight. Watch out for scorpions or snakes, which occasionally hide in the shaded crevices of the rocks during the day.
Time needed
For a relaxed walking tour, photographing the highly surreal landscape, and taking a short rest, you should typically plan to spend roughly two to three hours in this absolutely fascinating environment.
