Vila Viçosa is celebrated as the 'Marble Capital' of Portugal, owing to the vast quarries of high-quality white marble in the surrounding area. This abundance is reflected in the very fabric of the town, where marble is used not just for grand palaces and churches, but also for doorsteps, window frames, and even paving stones. The town was for centuries the ancestral seat of the House of Braganza, the last royal dynasty of Portugal. Its center-piece is the magnificent Paço Ducal (Ducal Palace), featuring an impressive 110-meter long marble facade and opulent interiors. The palace faces the vast Terreiro do Paço, one of Portugal's most impressive public squares, which is also home to the Augustinian Church and the Chagas de Lapa Convent. The medieval castle of Vila Viçosa now houses a hunting museum and an archeological collection. Walking through the town, visitors can appreciate the elegant blend of Renaissance and Baroque architecture. For those interested in industry, the nearby marble quarries offer a dramatic sight of deep white canyons carved into the earth. Local culinary specialties include almond-based sweets like 'Tibornas' and hearty meat dishes from the Alentejo tradition. The town is also a great base for exploring the Borba wine region. Vila Viçosa is best reached by car from Évora via the A6 motorway. The well-suited time to visit is during the spring or autumn, when the sunlight beautifully illuminates the white marble structures and the temperatures are comfortable for visiting the town's many cultural landmarks.
