Porto Martins is a sun-drenched coastal village on the eastern side of Terceira Island in the Azores. It is widely regarded as one of the warmest spots on the island, characterized by its unique volcanic landscape and fertile soils. The village is famous for its vineyards, which are planted in small plots separated by black basalt stone walls called 'curraletas'. This traditional method of cultivation protects the vines from sea breezes and produces the region's distinctive white wines. The highlight of the village is the Piscinas Oceânicas de Porto Martins, a set of natural swimming pools carved out of volcanic rock by ancient lava flows. These pools provide a safe and unique environment for swimming in the Atlantic, protected from the open ocean's swells.
