Blood Compact Shrine (Philippines)

Weather…

The Blood Compact Shrine in Bohol commemorates the first treaty of friendship between the native Filipinos and the Spanish kingdom, performed in 1565. The monument, located in Tagbilaran City, depicts the local chieftain, Rajah Sikatuna, and the Spanish explorer, Miguel López de Legazpi, performing the traditional ritual of drinking wine mixed with drops of their own blood. This symbolic act sealed an alliance of peace and mutual support, considered the first international treaty in Philippine history. Created by National Artist Napoleon Abueva, the monument also provides a spectacular panoramic view of the Bohol Sea. It is an essential site for understanding the diplomatic and colonial roots of the archipelago.
