San Pedro del Paraná, a town in the Itapúa Department of southern Paraguay, lies about 80 kilometres west of Encarnación along Route 1 and is one of the oldest towns in the region. It was founded in 1843 and named after the apostle Saint Peter and the Paraná River, which forms the southern border of the region. Today the town has around 30 000 inhabitants. San Pedro del Paraná is known nationwide for its strawberry production: thousands of tonnes of strawberries are grown in the surrounding countryside, drawing visitors every year at harvest time to the Festival de la Frutilla. Economically the town relies on agriculture (strawberries, maize, soybeans, rice), cattle ranching and modest tourism. Notable sights include the historic nineteenth-century parish church of San Pedro Apostol, the Mercado Municipal and the nearby Tebicuary River. The town also functions as the administrative and educational hub for the surrounding rural population.
