Loma Plata, a town in the Boquerón Department in the central Paraguayan Chaco, is the oldest Mennonite settlement in Paraguay and the headquarters of the Chortitzer Komitee Cooperative. It was founded in 1927 by German-Russian Mennonites who fled the Soviet Union via Canada to Paraguay in order to build a new, closed faith community in the inhospitable semi-desert. With around 12 000 inhabitants the town is the economic heart of the Menno Colony and the seat of the Cooperativa Chortitzer, one of the most important dairy cooperatives in South America, which has made brands such as Trébol famous far beyond Paraguay. Loma Plata is also a textbook example of successful desert colonisation: pioneering labour, well-drilling, cattle ranching and industrial dairy processing have turned the region into an agricultural powerhouse. Notable sights include the Menno Colony History Museum and the Mennonite pioneer archive with photographs and documents of the first settlers.
