💡 Tips
- Bring heavy-duty rain gear; Tabubil is one of the wettest places in the world with almost daily rainfall.
- The town is primarily built around the Ok Tedi mine; tourist facilities are very limited and accommodation must be booked well in advance.
- Access is strictly controlled; most visitors arrive by air, and road travel to Kiunga requires a sturdy 4WD.
- Malaria and other tropical diseases are a risk in the region; take appropriate medical precautions.
🍽 Food
Buy locally grown bananas, papayas, and pineapples from the town's central market.
A traditional staple in Papua New Guinea, sometimes available at local food stalls.
Since it's a mining town, many visitors dine at the company-run canteens or the main hotel restaurant.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The best place to find local produce and occasionally handmade string bags (bilums) from the surrounding villages.
The main supermarket stocks essential supplies, but prices are high due to the remote location.
When the clouds clear, the views of the surrounding dense jungle and steep mountains are wide-open.
The edges of the local golf course offer a somewhat cleared, peaceful area to observe the dramatic misty landscape.

Tabubil is a unique, purpose-built company town located deep within the Star Mountains of Papua New Guinea's Western Province. It was established primarily to serve the workforce of the massive Ok Tedi copper and gold mine, which is one of the economic backbones of the region. Surrounded by exceptionally dense, pristine rainforests, the town experiences one of the highest annual rainfall rates in the world, creating a lush, verdant environment. Due to its extremely remote, inland mountainous location, there are no coastal beaches, but the dramatic, misty mountain peaks and raging rivers offer wide-open, rugged scenery. Tourism is highly limited and specialized, primarily revolving around business travel, mining operations, and intrepid nature documentaries. The town has a modern infrastructure relative to the surrounding remote villages, including a hospital, schools, and an airstrip. Access is almost exclusively by air via the Tabubil Airport, or by a rugged highway connecting it to the river port of Kiunga.
