Stretching across western Panama, the Cordillera Central is an eastern extension of the Talamanca Range and forms the geological backbone of the country. This volcanic chain includes numerous peaks, including Panama's highest point, the Barú Volcano. The climate in the mountains varies with altitude, from hot, humid lowlands to cool, cloud-forested highlands. The region's biodiversity is extremely rich, hosting numerous endemic species. Coffee cultivation, especially the famous Geisha coffee, is a mainstay of the economy on the fertile volcanic soils. The mountain range also serves as a continental divide, defining the Caribbean and Pacific watersheds. The landscape is varied, dotted with steep valleys, waterfalls, and dense forests, attracting hikers and birdwatchers.
