The Mausoleum of Bibi Maryam is the only significant structure remaining from the once-thriving city of Qalhat. It was built in the 14th century by Baha al-Din Ayaz, the ruler of Hormuz, for his wife, Bibi Maryam. The building is a remarkable example of Persian-influenced architecture in Oman. Originally, the mausoleum was crowned by a large dome, which has since collapsed. The walls are adorned with intricate stucco work and niches, and there are traces of tilework that suggest a once-sumptuous interior. The square structure, with its tall, open archway, stands as a melancholic testament to Qalhat's past glory. It is believed that Bibi Maryam ruled the city herself after her husband's death, making her an important figure in the region's history.

The Tomb of Bibi Maryam in Qalhat is a well-preserved ruin and can be visited. The structure is accessible from the outside; the interior is often locked but visible through grilles.
Typical hours
As an open archaeological site, it is freely accessible during daylight hours. There are no fixed opening times; visitors should come during daytime.
Photography
Photography is allowed in the exterior area of the mausoleum. For close-up shots through the grilles, use a telephoto lens.
Time needed
Viewing the mausoleum takes about 15-20 minutes. Exploring the entire ancient city of Qalhat, however, can take up to two hours.

Getting there
Qalhat is about 20 km north of Sur on the coast of Oman. A rental car or taxi is the best option as public transport is infrequent.
