Narvik Port Terminal
The Narvik Port Terminal is one of Northern Norway's most significant industrial sites, primarily serving as the main transshipment point for iron ore from the Kiruna mines in northern Sweden. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the port remains ice-free year-round, providing a decisive strategic advantage over Baltic Sea ports. The terminal's history is inextricably linked to the construction of the Ofot Line at the end of the 19th century, which enabled the transport of ore across the mountains. Today, approximately 18 to 20 million tons of iron ore are loaded here annually by the Swedish state-owned mining company LKAB. The facilities are among the most efficient in the world, capable of loading massive bulk carriers in a very short time. Beyond ore exports, Narvik is increasingly evolving into a logistics hub for freight traffic between Europe and Asia via Arctic shipping routes. Its strategic location also grants the port significant importance for military logistics within NATO.
