Samjiyon is less a city and more a propaganda project at the foot of Mount Paektu, the most sacred mountain in Korea. The entire settlement has been completely demolished in recent years and rebuilt as a 'utopian socialist mountain village.' It serves as a model for the regime's modernization efforts and as a starting point for pilgrimages to Mount Paektu, which is closely linked to the founding mythology of the Kim dynasty. The new Samjiyon features modern apartments, a ski resort, museums, and monumental monuments. The project is intended to demonstrate the supposed superiority of the socialist system and to raise the standard of living in a remote, poor region. In reality, it was built with massive resources and the use of forced labor and stands in stark contrast to the reality in the rest of the country.
