Gobirau Minaret (Nigeria)

Weather…

The Gobirau Minaret is a historic tower located in the ancient city of Katsina, Nigeria, representing a masterpiece of traditional Habe (Hausa) architecture. Built over 600 years ago, historical accounts attribute its construction to Muhammadu Korau, the first Muslim King of Katsina, in the 14th century. The minaret stands approximately 15 meters high and is constructed using sun-dried mud bricks, palm timbers (giginya), and mud plaster. For centuries, it remained the tallest building in the city, serving as both a religious beacon and a strategic lookout tower for approaching threats. The site was also a renowned center for Islamic learning, playing a crucial role in the spread of education across the Sahel region. Various restoration efforts have been undertaken over the years to preserve its structural integrity against erosion. As a designated national monument since 1959, the Gobirau Minaret remains a symbol of the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Katsina Emirate.
