Mont-Dore Mining History

The mining history of Mont-Dore is intricately linked to the birth of the modern economy in New Caledonia. Starting around 1870, the slopes of this iconic mountain were exploited for their rich deposits of chromium and nickel. These early operations provided the necessary capital and employment to support the development of nearby Nouméa.
