Enschede is a major city in the eastern Netherlands, located in the province of Overijssel near the German border. Historically, the city rose to prominence in the 19th century as a leading international center for the textile industry, which shaped its urban layout and economic character for over a hundred years. Following the decline of the textile trade in the 1960s and 70s, Enschede successfully transitioned into a modern knowledge-based economy, largely anchored by the University of Twente, founded in 1961. The city gained tragic international attention on May 13, 2000, when a massive explosion at a fireworks warehouse destroyed the entire Roombeek neighborhood. Today, Enschede is the cultural and commercial heart for the Twente region, offering a diverse array of museums, such as the Rijksmuseum Twenthe, and a lively city center centered around the Oude Markt. It is also home to the professional football club FC Twente, which plays its matches at the De Grolsch Veste stadium.
