The Royal Palace of Amsterdam, situated on Dam Square, is one of the most significant monuments of the Dutch Golden Age. Originally designed as the City Hall between 1648 and 1655, the building was intended to demonstrate Amsterdam's immense wealth and political power during the 17th century. Architect Jacob van Campen created a monumental structure in the Dutch Classicist style, famously built on a foundation of 13,659 wooden piles. It was not until 1808 that King Louis Bonaparte converted the building into a royal palace. The lavish interior, particularly the Citizens' Hall (Burgerzaal), is adorned with marble sculptures and floor mosaics that symbolize Amsterdam's global influence at the time. Today, the palace is used by the Dutch Royal House for state visits, official receptions, and the presentation of prestigious annual awards.
