Breda is a historic fortified city located in the southern province of North Brabant, at the confluence of the Mark and Aa rivers. The city has a deep historical connection with the House of Orange-Nassau, as it served as their main residence in the Netherlands during the 15th and 16th centuries, earning it the nickname Nassau City. The Grote Kerk, or Church of Our Lady, is a prime example of Brabantine Gothic architecture and contains the elaborate tombs of the early Nassau ancestors. Breda Castle, which now houses the Royal Military Academy, has been a centerpiece of the city's defensive and royal history for centuries. The city is also famous for the Siege of Breda in 1624-1625 during the Eighty Years' War, an event immortalized by the Spanish painter Velázquez. Today, Breda is renowned for its hospitable atmosphere, lively shopping districts, and lush parks like the Valkenberg. It serves as a major educational hub, hosting several universities and maintaining a strong identity through annual festivals.
