Heroes' Acre is an official war memorial of the Republic of Namibia, located approximately ten kilometers south of Windhoek. It was inaugurated on August 26, 2002, on Namibia's Heroes' Day, to honor the men and women who fought for the country's independence. The monument was designed by the North Korean firm Mansudae Overseas Projects in a monumental style and includes a large amphitheater with 5,000 seats. At its center stands an 11-meter-high statue of an unknown soldier holding an AK-47 and a grenade, positioned before a 34-meter-high white marble obelisk. The site contains 174 graves, many of which are symbolic or reserved for the future burial of national heroes. An eternal flame burns at the foot of the monument, symbolizing the enduring spirit of resistance and freedom. The area also provides panoramic views over the hills surrounding Windhoek.

Visiting
The expansive memorial grounds are fully open to the public for outdoor exploration. Visitors can walk up the monumental stairs to view the obelisk, the bronze statue, and the graves of national heroes.

The site is typically open during daylight hours from early morning until late afternoon. It is highly advisable to visit during the cooler morning hours, as there is very little shade available in the midday sun.

The monument is conveniently located about ten kilometers south of the city center along the B1 highway. It is most easily accessible by private vehicle or taxi, and there is ample parking available right at the entrance.

Bring plenty of drinking water, sunscreen, and a hat, as the Namibian sun is intensely strong. Wear comfortable walking shoes to comfortably navigate the many stairs leading up to the main monument.
