Heroes' Acre
Heroes' Acre is an official war memorial of the Republic of Namibia, located approximately ten kilometers south of Windhoek. It was inaugurated on August 26, 2002, on Namibia's Heroes' Day, to honor the men and women who fought for the country's independence. The monument was designed by the North Korean firm Mansudae Overseas Projects in a monumental style and includes a large amphitheater with 5,000 seats. At its center stands an 11-meter-high statue of an unknown soldier holding an AK-47 and a grenade, positioned before a 34-meter-high white marble obelisk. The site contains 174 graves, many of which are symbolic or reserved for the future burial of national heroes. An eternal flame burns at the foot of the monument, symbolizing the enduring spirit of resistance and freedom. The area also provides panoramic views over the hills surrounding Windhoek.
