The Fish River is the longest interior river in Namibia, world-famous for carving the Fish River Canyon, one of the largest canyons on Earth. Rising in the Naukluft Mountains, the river flows south for over 650 kilometers before joining the Orange River at the border with South Africa. While its upper reaches are controlled by the Hardap Dam for irrigation and urban water supply, the lower section is defined by extreme erosion and panoramic scenery. The canyon itself stretches about 160 kilometers and reaches depths of up to 550 meters, shaped by tectonic shifts and millions of years of water action. Accessing the main viewpoints typically involves a drive on well-graded gravel roads from nearby regional hubs. For those embarking on the famous multi-day hike, the official starting point requires advanced booking and a coordinated drop-off arrangement.
Best season
The intense multi-day hiking trail is strictly open only during the cooler winter months, from May to mid-September, to prevent severe heat-related incidents. Scenic driving and viewpoints are accessible year-round, though summer is extremely hot.
