Fish River (Namibia)

Weather…

The Fish River is the longest interior river in Namibia, world-famous for carving the Fish River Canyon, one of the largest canyons on Earth. Rising in the Naukluft Mountains, the river flows south for over 650 kilometers before joining the Orange River at the border with South Africa. While its upper reaches are controlled by the Hardap Dam for irrigation and urban water supply, the lower section is defined by extreme erosion and panoramic scenery. The canyon itself stretches about 160 kilometers and reaches depths of up to 550 meters, shaped by tectonic shifts and millions of years of water action. In summer, the river can transform into a raging torrent following heavy rain, whereas in winter, it often diminishes to a series of stagnant pools. The area is a premier hiking destination and features the famous Ai-Ais hot springs at its southern end.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Accessing the main viewpoints typically involves a drive on well-graded gravel roads from nearby regional hubs. For those embarking on the famous multi-day hike, the official starting point requires advanced booking and a coordinated drop-off arrangement.
📅
Best season
The intense multi-day hiking trail is strictly open only during the cooler winter months, from May to mid-September, to prevent severe heat-related incidents. Scenic driving and viewpoints are accessible year-round, though summer is extremely hot.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The environment is a dramatic, immense canyon characterized by rugged, steep rock faces, boulder-strewn riverbeds, and deep, dry ravines. Hiking involves traversing exceptionally challenging, uneven ground with massive elevation changes.
🎒
What to bring
If tackling the full hike, heavy-duty trekking boots, comprehensive first-aid supplies, a reliable water purification system, and all your own food are strictly mandatory. Day visitors will still need excellent sun protection and comfortable walking shoes.
🅿️
Parking
Designated, secure parking is usually available at the main resort located near the primary viewpoints and trailheads. Hikers typically leave their vehicles at their accommodation and use established shuttle services to reach the actual start of the trail.
⚠️
Safety
The sheer drops at the canyon edges pose a significant danger, so visitors must remain behind any constructed safety barriers. For hikers, extreme isolation, potential flash floods, and dangerous heat exhaustion require meticulous physical preparation.
⏱️
Time needed
Simply viewing the canyon and taking photographs from the designated rim lookouts typically takes about two to three hours. The famous, strenuous descent and hike along the riverbed itself requires a mandatory commitment of four to five full days.
