Despite the isolated location and lack of fresh water, the mine operated until the 1940s, employing state-of-the-art technology to extract diamonds from marine deposits. Today, only weathered ruins of the former settlement remain, scarred by aggressive saltwater and constant winds. Visiting
The former diamond settlement at Bogenfels is an abandoned ghost town that can only be viewed from outside. Entering the buildings is not allowed due to safety hazards from collapse.
Typical hours
The site is accessible at any time, but due to its remote location, it's best to visit during daylight hours. There is no lighting or infrastructure on site.

Photography of the ruins and surrounding dunes is encouraged, offering spectacular subjects. Make use of the low sun for dramatic shadows.
Time needed
Allow about one hour to explore the settlement and walk to the nearby Bogenfels rock. Walking on sand is tiring; sturdy footwear is essential.
