Fortaleza de Maputo (Mozambique)

Weather…

The Fortress of Maputo, formally known as Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, is one of the oldest and most significant historical monuments in the Mozambican capital. The current structure was built around 1781 by the Portuguese on the site of an earlier Dutch fort, intended to protect the strategic harbor of Lourenço Marques. Throughout its history, the fortress has served various roles, including a military garrison, a prison, and a storehouse, witnessing the ebb and flow of colonial power. Inside its thick reddish stone walls, there is now a military museum featuring a collection of cannons, colonial statues, and historical artifacts. A highlight of the site is the wooden coffin containing the remains of Ngungunhane, the last king of the Gaza Empire, who was returned to Mozambique from Portugal in 1985. The fortress provides a tranquil courtyard with old trees, offering a stark contrast to the bustling modern port city just outside its gates.
