Manhiça is a dynamic town in the Maputo Province, located about 80 kilometers north of the capital city. Geographically, the area benefits from its location in the Incomati Basin, which features highly fertile soils that support intensive agriculture. The town is primarily famous for two sectors: its significant sugar industry and its internationally renowned medical research. The Maragra sugar mill, one of the oldest and largest in the country, serves as the region's main employer. Simultaneously, the town hosts the Manhiça Health Research Centre (CISM), a world-leading institution in malaria research established in 1996. Historically, Manhiça has been a vital stop along the EN1 national highway, connecting southern and northern Mozambique. The local economy is further bolstered by banana cultivation, vegetable farming, and cattle ranching. Culturally, the town is characterized by a blend of various ethnic groups, visible in its local markets and festivals. This combination of industrial production and scientific excellence makes Manhiça a unique hub within the Mozambican landscape.
