Erg Chebbi, often simply referred to as the Merzouga Dunes, is one of Morocco's two major Saharan sand seas. This dune landscape spans approximately 22 kilometers in length and up to 5 kilometers in width, with some dunes reaching an impressive height of 150 meters. Geologically, these formations were created by wind-blown sand (aeolian processes) accumulating at the foothills of the Anti-Atlas range. The characteristic orange-gold hue of the sand changes dramatically depending on the time of day and the sun's position. Merzouga, located on the edge of the Erg, serves as the primary base for desert expeditions, often conducted via camel trek or 4x4 vehicles. Despite the extreme aridity, seasonal lakes like Dayet Srji can appear nearby after rainfall, attracting flocks of flamingos. The region is also famous for its traditional Gnaoua music, maintained by the descendants of former slaves in villages like Khamlia. Erg Chebbi remains a powerful symbol of the Moroccan desert's pristine beauty.

The best time to visit the dunes is during the cooler months from October to May, as the summer brings extreme desert heat that can make outdoor activities unbearable and potentially dangerous during the middle of the day.
