Erg Chebbi (Morocco)

Weather…

Erg Chebbi, often simply referred to as the Merzouga Dunes, is one of Morocco's two major Saharan sand seas. This dune landscape spans approximately 22 kilometers in length and up to 5 kilometers in width, with some dunes reaching an impressive height of 150 meters. Geologically, these formations were created by wind-blown sand (aeolian processes) accumulating at the foothills of the Anti-Atlas range. The characteristic orange-gold hue of the sand changes dramatically depending on the time of day and the sun's position. Merzouga, located on the edge of the Erg, serves as the primary base for desert expeditions, often conducted via camel trek or 4x4 vehicles. Despite the extreme aridity, seasonal lakes like Dayet Srji can appear nearby after rainfall, attracting flocks of flamingos. The region is also famous for its traditional Gnaoua music, maintained by the descendants of former slaves in villages like Khamlia. Erg Chebbi remains a powerful symbol of the Moroccan desert's pristine beauty.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Erg Chebbi is typically accessed from the village of Merzouga, which is well-connected by road to major Moroccan cities like Marrakech and Fes; from the village, the impressive sand dunes can be reached on foot, by camel, or via 4x4 vehicles provided by local tour operators.
📅
Best season
The best time to visit the dunes is during the cooler months from October to May, as the summer brings extreme desert heat that can make outdoor activities unbearable and potentially dangerous during the middle of the day.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is defined by vast, shifting sand dunes that can reach impressive heights, meaning walking involves trudging through soft, loose sand that quickly tires the legs, though the valleys between dunes are generally flatter and easier to traverse.
🎒
What to bring
Essential items for exploring the dunes include sun protection like hats and high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses to shield from blowing sand, a lightweight scarf, layered clothing for cold nights, closed shoes, and an abundant supply of drinking water.
🅿️
Parking
Most visitors leave their vehicles safely parked at their chosen riad or hotel in Merzouga, which generally provide secure facilities, before joining organized excursions directly into the desert area where personal vehicles are impractical.
⚠️
Safety
While generally safe with guided tours, wandering alone deep into the dunes can lead to disorientation; visitors must also be mindful of rapid temperature drops after sunset and stay hydrated to prevent heatstroke during daytime excursions.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical visit ranges from a simple sunset or sunrise excursion taking a few hours, to an overnight camp experience lasting roughly 24 hours, giving sufficient time to appreciate the shifting colors and quiet atmosphere of the desert environment.
