Water temperature…
Tosontsengel sits at 1,724 metres above sea level in the valley of the Idermörön River in the northern Khangai Mountains of Zavkhan Province and ranks among the coldest permanently inhabited places on Earth. The town has roughly 12,000 inhabitants and recorded a low of minus 53.7 degrees Celsius on 1 January 1973, one of the lowest temperatures ever measured in a Mongolian settlement. In summer, however, temperatures can climb above 30 degrees, giving an annual range close to 85 degrees. The surrounding country is dominated by extensive Siberian larch forests covering up to 60 percent of the province. Timber processing and sawmills are accordingly the leading industries alongside livestock herding. Tosontsengel has a small airport with seasonal flights to Ulaanbaatar. Permafrost underlies the entire area, requiring specialised engineering for building foundations and complicating the local water supply throughout the year.
