Öndörkhaan, officially renamed Chinggis City in 2013, sits at 1,027 metres above sea level on the Kherlen River at the eastern foot of the Khentii Mountains. It is the capital of Khentii Province, the traditional birth region of Genghis Khan. The town has about 19,000 inhabitants and lies 331 kilometres east of Ulaanbaatar. Roughly 100 kilometres northwest stands Deluun Boldog, the presumed birthplace of Genghis Khan, on the Onon River around the year 1162. Nearby rises the sacred Burkhan Khaldun (2,362 m), where Genghis Khan is believed to have been buried in 1227, although the exact grave site remains unknown. The town gained sombre worldwide fame through the air disaster of 13 September 1971, when Chinese Marshal Lin Biao was killed while fleeing Mao Zedong towards the USSR, his aircraft crashing just nearby. The surroundings are pristine steppe and forest landscape.
