Monte Albán (Mexico)

Weather…

Monte Albán, perched on a leveled hilltop in the Valley of Oaxaca, served as the preeminent political and economic capital of the Zapotec civilization for over a millennium. Founded around 500 BCE, it is recognized as one of the earliest true urban centers in Mesoamerica. The monumental Main Plaza is flanked by pyramids, temples, and residential palaces, displaying sophisticated symmetry and astronomical alignments. Notable features include the 'Danzantes' stone carvings, believed to depict sacrificed war captives, and Building J, a unique arrow-shaped structure functioning as an observatory. Following the Zapotec decline around 850 CE, the Mixtec people utilized the site as a sacred burial ground, famously evidenced by the 1932 discovery of Tomb 7 and its vast gold treasure. Monte Albán was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987 and provides unparalleled panoramic views of the surrounding valleys.
