Ixtapa was conceived in the 1970s as a planned tourism destination and today provides all the comforts of a modern holiday spot. The hotel zone stretches along Playa El Palmar, a beautiful, miles-long beach. In contrast to neighboring Zihuatanejo, elegant high-rise resorts, chic shopping centers, and well-developed infrastructure with bike paths dominate here. For active travelers, there are two award-winning golf courses and a modern marina. Gastronomy ranges from international buffets in hotels to upscale restaurants in the marina. A popular excursion destination is Isla Ixtapa, accessible by boat, offering four different beaches for snorkeling and relaxation. Access is very straightforward via the nearby Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport. The best time to visit is the dry season from November to May. Ixtapa is excellent for families and travelers seeking relaxation in a luxurious setting without sacrificing modern amenities. The combination of sun, sea, and sports offerings makes it one of the top destinations on the Mexican Pacific coast.
