Church of Dolores Hidalgo (Mexico)

Weather…

The Church of Dolores Hidalgo, officially the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, is the historic site where the Mexican War of Independence began. In the early hours of September 16, 1810, the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the church bells to summon the people and issue a call to arms against Spanish colonial rule. This event, famously known as the "Grito de Dolores," marks the birth of the Mexican independence movement. The building itself was constructed between 1712 and 1778 and is a significant example of Mexican Baroque architecture, featuring a grand Churrigueresque facade. Inside, the church preserves beautiful colonial-era altarpieces that reflect the religious art of the 18th century. Every year, the President of Mexico commemorates the Grito, acknowledging Dolores Hidalgo as the "Cradle of Independence." The church stands as a national monument and a symbol of freedom for the Mexican people.
