Paquimé, Casas Grandes (Mexico)

Weather…

Paquimé, also known as Casas Grandes, is a remarkable archaeological site in the state of Chihuahua that flourished between 900 and 1450 AD. The city functioned as a major trading and cultural link between the civilizations of Central Mexico and the Pueblo cultures of the American Southwest. Its unique architecture consists of multi-story adobe buildings that featured advanced water management systems, including canals and drainage. Paquimé is famous for its ceremonial mounds, ball courts, and specialized workshops for producing copper bells and shell ornaments. Notably, the site shows evidence of large-scale macaw breeding, as their colorful feathers were highly valued trade items. The city suffered a violent destruction around 1340 and was eventually abandoned in the 15th century for reasons that remain a subject of study. Due to its significance in understanding prehistoric settlement patterns, Paquimé was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1998.
