Le Domaine des Aubineaux
Le Domaine des Aubineaux is a striking colonial mansion located in the highland city of Curepipe, built in 1872. This historic residence is a prime example of the grand architecture favored by the island's wealthy sugar estate owners in the late 19th century. Crafted from exquisite timbers such as ebony and rosewood, the house features wide, breezy verandas and intricate woodwork that have been meticulously preserved. Since opening as a museum in 2000, it has served as the first stop on the renowned 'Tea Route' (Route du Thé), offering guests an immersive look into the daily life of the Mauritian aristocracy. The rooms are filled with original period furniture, East India Company antiques, and a vast collection of photographs that narrate the history of the Central Plateau. Outside, the estate is surrounded by a magnificent arboretum containing ancient camphor trees and rare endemic plants. A visit to the Domaine features a refined experience that combines architectural appreciation with botanical discovery, illustrating the deep historical ties between the land, the tea industry, and the colonial heritage of Mauritius.
