Chateau de Mon Plaisir
Positioned within the heart of the renowned Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in Pamplemousses, the Chateau de Mon Plaisir is a grand colonial mansion. The current two-story structure was built by the British in 1823 on the site of a previous estate that once belonged to the French Governor Mahé de La Bourdonnais. Its architectural design is typical of the colonial period, featuring a wide wrap-around veranda designed to provide shade and catch the cooling tropical breezes. For decades, the mansion served as a prestigious residence for governors and hosted distinguished international guests visiting Mauritius. Today, the building is a protected national heritage site, used primarily for official government receptions and state functions, standing as a testament to the island's rich historical narrative and the seamless blending of French and British colonial influences.
