Sakoa Coal Mine (Madagascar)

Weather…

The Sakoa coal basin is Madagascar's most significant coal deposit, located in the southwest of the island within the Atsimo-Andrefana region. The coal seams date back to the Upper Carboniferous and Permian periods, holding estimated reserves of over 200 million tons of high-quality thermal coal. Exploiting this basin is a central component of the national energy strategy, aimed at reducing reliance on expensive oil imports for power generation. Beyond domestic energy use, there is substantial potential for export via the proposed deep-water port at Soalara. However, the industrial development of the Sakoa mine requires massive investments in rail and port infrastructure in a historically underdeveloped region. For decades, there have been efforts to bring the mine into full-scale production, with environmental standards and local community rights increasingly coming into focus. If successfully operated, Sakoa could significantly accelerate the industrial growth of southern Madagascar.
