Arch of Marcus Aurelius (Libya)

Weather…

The Arch of Marcus Aurelius is the sole surviving Roman monument in the Libyan capital of Tripoli, the ancient city of Oea. Erected in 163 or 164 AD, this tetrapylon (four-way arch) commemorates the military triumphs of Emperor Marcus Aurelius and his co-ruler Lucius Verus. Constructed entirely from white marble, the arch was originally positioned at the intersection of the city's two primary thoroughfares, the Cardo and the Decumanus. Its architecture is notable for its intricate reliefs depicting captive barbarians, the city's patron goddess Tyche, and the imperial victory chariot. Over the centuries, the arch became partially submerged in the ground, leading to its near-total encapsulation by the surrounding buildings of the Old City. It was not until the Italian colonial period in the early 20th century that the monument was systematically excavated and restored. Today, the arch stands in a sunken plaza near the harbor, serving as a powerful symbol of Tripoli's rich classical heritage.
