Riga Cathedral Square (Latvia)

Weather…

Cathedral Square, or Doma laukums, is the largest and most prominent square in the historic center of Riga. It is dominated by the Riga Cathedral, a massive medieval church that serves as the seat of the Archbishop of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church. The square was created in the late 19th century through the demolition of several blocks of older buildings, opening up the space to showcase the cathedral’s architecture. It is surrounded by impressive 19th and 20th-century buildings, including the Art Museum Riga Bourse and the main building of Latvian Radio. The square is a focal point for the city's public life, hosting concerts, Christmas markets, and political demonstrations throughout the year. Its paved expanse features a unique vantage point from which to admire the various architectural styles that define the Old Town, from Romanesque to Art Nouveau. As the "heart" of the city, it encapsulates the multi-layered history of Riga as a Baltic metropolis.
