Pape Lake (Latvia)

Weather…

Pape Lake is a shallow coastal lake in southwestern Latvia that gained international fame through a unique rewilding project. Since 1999, wild horses (Koniks) and since 2004, aurochs back-breeding (Taurus cattle) have been introduced to naturally prevent the scrub encroachment of the coastal meadows. Geographically, the lake is characterized by its shallow depth, averaging only 0.5 meters, and its immediate proximity to the Baltic Sea. The area is one of the most important stops on the White Sea-Baltic flyway, where millions of birds rest annually. An ornithological station has been conducting extensive ringing programs since the 1960s. Historically, the region was characterized by fishing villages, with the village of Pape preserving authentic Courland architecture to this day. Managing water levels and grazing areas is crucial for the balance of this artificially stabilized ecosystem.
