Nong Fa Lake (Laos)

Weather…

Nong Fa Lake, also known as the 'Sky Lake,' is a spectacular volcanic crater lake located in the remote Dong Amphan National Park in Attapeu Province. Situated at an elevation of about 1,150 metres in the Annamite Mountains near the border with Vietnam, it is one of Laos' most mysterious natural wonders. The lake was likely formed by a volcanic eruption or impact and is famed for its deep blue, crystal-clear waters. Due to its extreme isolation, reaching the lake requires strenuous multi-day trekking, making it a prime destination for dedicated adventurers. To local ethnic minorities, particularly the Brau people, the lake is a sacred site believed to be inhabited by spirits. Local legends claim the lake is bottomless, adding to its mystical allure. The surrounding area consists of pristine primary rainforest, providing habitat for rare wildlife. Nong Fa remains largely untouched by modern development, offering a rare glimpse into a prehistoric landscape.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Nong Fa Lake is located in the very remote southeast of Laos. The journey is highly adventurous and absolutely requires a strong off-road vehicle, a knowledgeable local driver, and schedule flexibility.
📅
Best season
Accessibility is almost exclusively possible during the dry season between November and April. During the rainy season, the dirt tracks turn into deep mud trenches, making any passage impossible.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The surroundings of the volcanic crater lake are densely forested and hilly. The final descent to the deep blue water can be slippery and steep, requiring focused walking on the uneven paths.
🎒
What to bring
Robust hiking boots, sufficient drinking water, and good insect repellent are essential. Since there is no tourist infrastructure, provisions and emergency equipment must be brought by visitors.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicles are parked at the end of the navigable track, often near small settlements or junctions. The remainder of the way to the lakeshore typically must then be covered entirely on foot.
⚠️
Safety
The area is extremely isolated; in emergencies, help is far away. Respect local legends about mountain spirits and firmly avoid swimming in the lake if local guides advise against it.
⏱️
Time needed
The journey itself often takes multiple days. For the actual stay at Nong Fa Lake, you should allocate at least a half-day upon arrival to truly appreciate the tranquil and remote atmosphere.
