Naryn River

The Naryn River is the longest river in Kyrgyzstan, flowing for approximately 807 kilometers across the country before joining the Kara Darya in Uzbekistan to form the Syr Darya. Originating from the high-altitude glaciers of the Central Tian Shan mountains, it carves through deep canyons and wide valleys as it travels westward. The river is the backbone of Kyrgyzstan's energy sector, hosting a cascade of major hydroelectric power stations, including the Toktogul Dam, which creates the largest reservoir in Central Asia. These facilities generate the majority of the nation's electricity and play a crucial role in regulating irrigation water for the downstream agricultural regions of the Fergana Valley. The scenery along the Naryn is diverse, ranging from arid, red-rock cliffs to fertile riverside ecosystems.
