Vasco da Gama Pillar (Kenya)

Weather…

The Vasco da Gama Pillar in Malindi is one of the oldest European monuments in Africa and a significant relic of the Age of Discovery. It was erected in 1498 by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama as a 'padrão' (stone cross) to mark his successful arrival at the East African coast during his historic voyage to find a sea route to India. Unlike his hostile receptions in Mombasa, da Gama found a friendly ally in the Sultan of Malindi, who provided him with an experienced pilot to guide his fleet across the Indian Ocean. The pillar is built from local coral stone and topped with a cross carved from Lisbon limestone, featuring the coat of arms of Portugal. Despite five centuries of exposure to salt spray and maritime erosion, the pillar remains standing on its original rocky outcrop overlooking the sea. Managed by the National Museums of Kenya, it serves as a major tourist attraction and a symbol of the long history of cross-cultural trade and exploration on the Swahili Coast. Recent conservation efforts have reinforced the sea wall around the pillar to protect this historical landmark from the rising sea levels.
