The Kostanay region in northern Kazakhstan is known as the country's breadbasket. The vast, gently rolling plains are covered with endless wheat fields that stretch to the horizon. This agricultural landscape is a direct result of the Soviet-era 'Virgin Lands Campaign' in the 1950s, during which huge areas of steppe were converted into arable land. Today, Kazakhstan is one of the largest grain exporters in the world, and a significant portion of this comes from Kostanay. In summer, the fields turn into a golden sea, and during the harvest season in late summer and early autumn, huge combine harvesters are at work to bring in the rich harvest.
