The Trans-Ili Alatau (Zailiysky Alatau) is an impressive mountain range in the northern part of the Tian Shan system. It forms the spectacular southern backdrop to Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city. The highest peak of the range is Pik Talgar, at 4,979 meters. The mountain range extends for about 360 kilometers from east to west. Its proximity to the city makes it an extremely popular recreational area for locals and tourists. In winter, the Shymbulak ski resort is a top destination, while in summer, numerous hiking trails, mountain lakes like the Big Almaty Lake, and climbing routes attract visitors. The mountains are also home to rich biodiversity, including the rare snow leopard, and several national parks, such as the Ile-Alatau National Park, have been established to protect this unique alpine environment.

Getting there

Located directly south of Almaty, the mountains are easily accessible by public bus, cable car (to Medeu/Shymbulak), or taxi. The city's proximity makes reaching the initial hiking trails very simple and fast.

Best season

Summer (July to September) is convenient for alpine hiking, while winter attracts skiers to the Shymbulak resort. During the transition months of May and June, there is often an increased risk of avalanches in higher areas.

Terrain & paths

The landscape gives everything from forested valleys to glaciated peaks exceeding 4,000 meters in height. Trails vary from broad forest roads to narrow, scree-covered paths in the high alpine environment.

What to bring

For alpine treks, sturdy boots, sun protection, and weatherproof clothing are essential even in summer. Trekking poles are highly beneficial on the steep scree slopes and significantly reduce joint strain for hikers.

Parking

Large parking lots are available at base stations like Medeu, though they can fill up quickly on weekends. In higher elevations, parking is often restricted to designated spots or specific hotel facilities.

Safety

Mountain weather can change extremely rapidly, so hikers should always have a backup plan and check forecasts. In more remote valleys, be mindful of the presence of wildlife, such as bears, in the area.

Time needed

Short hikes of two to three hours are just as possible as demanding multi-day camping treks in the wild. Many Almaty residents use the mountains for quick half-day trips to escape the summer heat of the city.
